Kathleen Odell Korgen is Professor of Sociology at William Paterson University, a comprehensive university in Wayne, New Jersey. With Maxine Atkinson, she has co-authored and edited content for three texts in SAGE′s "Sociology in Action" series: Sociology in Action; Social Problems: Sociology in Action; and Race and Ethnicity: Sociology in Action. Kathleen has also co-authored or co-edited numerous other books that teach students to use the sociological tools they gain in their classes and to find inspiration from public sociologists and fellow sociology students. These books include Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology, The Engaged Sociologist: Connecting the Classroom to the Community, Sociologists in Action: Sociology, Social Change, and Social Justice and Sociologists in Action on Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality. She has written or edited the following books on race relations and racial identity: Race Policy and Multiracial Americans, Multiracial Americans and Social Class, Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans, and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans. She is the editor of The Cambridge Handbook of Sociology. Kathleen works as a consultant for other sociology departments as a member of the Departmental Resources Group of the American Sociological Association. She has received William Paterson University's Award for Excellence in Scholarship/Creative Expression and the university's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Maxine P. Atkinson is Professor of Sociology at North Carolina State University, a research-intensive university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Maxine specializes in training graduate students to teach, mentoring faculty from a variety of disciplines and leading programs for first year students as well as teaching introductory sociology courses both on campus and study abroad. Maxine has published extensively on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and is the co-author of In the Trenches: Teaching and Learning Sociology. As a member of the American Sociological Associations' Department Resources Group, she conducts curriculum reviews and teaching workshops for other departments and universities. Maxine has won a number of teaching awards in sociology including the American Sociological Association Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award, the Carla B. Howery Award for Developing Teacher-Scholars, and the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Sociology, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Sociological Society. Maxine was the first woman at NC State to win the North Carolina university system teaching award, the Board of Governors' Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was also inducted into NC State's Academy of Outstanding Professors, and won winning the NC State Outstanding Teacher award, the Richard Felder Award for Outstanding Service in Support of Teaching and Learning, the First Year Student Advocate Award, the Lonnie and Carol Poole Award for Excellence in Teaching.
