Mast cells are found in all tissues of the oral cavity including dental pulp.Degranulation of mast cell releases proinflammatory mediators such as Tumor Necrosis factor-alpha, Chymase, Tryptase, Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs), Heparin, Histamine, various interleukins IL3, IL4, IL5, IL6, IL8, IL10, IL13,IL16 and cytokines contributing to the progress of periodontal disease. Thus the administration of locally or systemically acting mast cell stabilizer that inhibit mast cell degranulation may be a useful method to probe the role of mast cell in periodontitis.
