Softshell turtles as pets Softshell turtles are among the most unique chelonians in the world. They're myriad physical and behavioral adaptations provide a nice contrast with those of most commonly kept turtle species, and yet, relatively few keepers work with these amazing animals. While softshell turtles are not ideal for all keepers, they do adapt well to captivity when provided with suitable accommodations, proper temperatures and clean water. They reach impressive sizes and have defensive demeanors, so they are not appropriate for beginners or those unable to provide them with enough space. However, for those who can provide these requirements, and have the necessary skill, dedication and resources, softshell turtles are very intriguing pets. As when caring for any animal as a pet, keepers must learn as much as possible about the biology, behavior and ecology of softshell turtles, in order to provide them the highest quality of life possible. Begin that journey inside, by learning about these interesting turtles, their place in the world and how to provide them with an artificial habitat that meets their needs. The author, Ben Team, is an environmental educator and author with over 16 years of professional reptile-keeping experience.
