As a result of the impact of war, Somalia has experienced the collapse of national and political institutions and as a result the inhabitants have been deprived of basic social and economic services. The population of the Puntland region has increased greatly since the war, in part due to the sizable population of IDPs who fled from the southern parts of the country for security and economic reasons. To alleviate some of these problems, a solar street lighting project was planned for some of the residents of Bossaso, a sea port in the north eastern state of Puntland, Somalia. A feasibility study was carried out in the area and the results of the study have been detailed in this book. Whilst LED streetlights have in the recent past been installed in certain areas of Bossaso, this report equally recommends streetlights that use Induction lamps largely due to the fact that the latter are much better at withstanding the high temperatures occasioned during the summer months in Bossaso.
