The theme of "Solo Voices: A Novel of Forgiveness" has been stirring in my consciousness for years. Forgiveness: that complex and essential quality of human happiness. Do we recognize the need for forgiveness and are we able to rise above our petty resentments to offer it? And when it is offered, can we be humble enough to accept it? The three women of "Solo Voices"--Bessie, Natalie and Veronica--each from a different perspective--must face the need for forgiveness. They are strong women, drawn together by family relationships and their love for Daniel Rafferty. In their diverse roles and from their divergent perspectives they work out their destinies. Bessie touches the core of their lives and their conflicts when she prays over Veronica's coffin: "Forgive us both for we have shed innocent blood."
