Franz Michael Felder (1839-1869), der berühmteste Vorarlberger seines Jahrhunderts, wuchs in Schoppernau auf. Ein Bauer, aber ein lesender Bauer, der so seinen Horizont weitet. Die wirtschaftliche Abhängigkeit von Handelsmonopolen und die weltanschauliche Zurüstung der Untertanen durch eine bildungsfeindliche Kirche erkannte Felder bald als die Grundprobleme seiner Heimat. Als 27-Jähriger gründete er eine landwirtschaftliche Genossenschaft. Vom Pfarrer verhetzt als »Freimaurer« und »Rot-Republikaner«, organisierte er u. a. eine erste Volksbücherei. Mit Gleichgesinnten versuchte er eine Reformpartei. Zu größerem Ruhm kam Felder als Schriftsteller. Nach mehreren Veröffentlichungen kam sein erster Zeitroman (»Sonderlinge«) 1867 heraus, und er wurde in Leipzig Ehrenmitglied des dortigen Germanistenclubs. In dieser Zeit schreibt er an seinem Roman »Reich und Arm«, in dem er die Lebensthemen des sozialen Reformers mit seiner Heimatliebe verwob.
