Joesphine Esther Ross was born in New York City, November 21, 1907. She was the only child of Dr. Amadeus William Grabau, Professor of Geology and Palaeontology at Columbia University, later at the University of Peking, China, and of Mary Antin, author of The Promised Land and lecturer on problems of immigration and related subjects. At one time she was secretary to Mrs. William J. Gould at Gould Farm, a unique social service community in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In 1931, at the age of 24, Josephine met Meher Baba. This meeting was a sublimely transforming event in her life, and inspired her to write poetry. In 1937 she married Charles Kenneth Ross, a fellow disciple of Meher Baba, and together they operated an organic farm in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. They had three daughters, Margarita, Anne, and Rosemary. They lived on the farm until his untimely death in 1954, when Josephine relocated and worked for the State of New York in Albany. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 91.
