If we turn our attention towards the sound system of any languages, we face a crucial problem. The most striking is why and how languages change. Do these changes follow a logical sequence? Do they reflect any significant function or are they merely an invention for convenience s sake? It is historical linguistics that studies the changes certain languages undergo. The task of such linguists is to seek and define the nature of these changes, and then to discover how and when they occurred. There are two methods used for discovering these changes: the comparative method and the method of internal reconstruction. The book briefly clarifies some basic terms and concepts that are essential for understanding the instruments at work in the history of sound changes, such as characteristics, segmental change, phonetically conditioned sound change and phonological change. It also describes the controversial views of the Neogrammarians, the Structuralists and the early Generativists, and finally attempts to reconcile the three schools of linguistics.
