Autorenporträt
Ernest Shackleton wurde 1874 in Irland geboren. Er gehört zu den größten Polarforschern des letzten Jahrhunderts: Er nahm an Robert Falcon Scotts Antarktisexpedition von 1901-1904 teil. 1907 leitete er eine eigene Expedition, um den Südpol zu erreichen. Doch kurz vor dem Ziel musste er aufgeben. Er lokalisierte den magnetischen Südpol und bestieg den Mt. Erebus. Fünf Jahre nach der Endurance-Expedition brach er 1921 zu seiner letzten Fahrt in die Antarktis auf. Er starb 1922 auf seinem Schiff Quest.
