In this mystery/thriller, set in the deep south in the state of Mississippi, Beth Barrington must enter the sometimes sinister world of Mississippi politics to solve her sister's murder. It is all set in motion by the horrific firebombing of a local minority-owned newspaper, the Jackson Liberator, years before. As the story begins, Beth - a former private eye turned law student at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, - has her life all mapped out. That is, until she discovers her beloved sister, Jolee is missing. Traveling from Atlanta to Jackson, Mississippi, she's anxious to see Jolee's daughter and take care of her until Jolee is found. After some hunters discover Jolee's lifeless body in some deep woods in Madison County, north of Jackson, Beth's sole mission in life is to find her sister's killer. Along the way, she rekindles an old love with long ago college boyfriend, Mark Livingston, who is running for Governor of Mississippi in the general election. Mark has a vendetta of his own against a force so powerful he has no idea what he's up against. He joins Beth in her search for the truth as he searches for his own truths also. The twists and turns Beth and Mark encounter as they diligently search for answers leave them dangerously vulnerable to a killer and give way to suspicions to inquire in the most unlikely places for answers. Neither Beth nor Mark can anticipate what becomes a deadly chase of cat and mouse. When they finally discover the truth, it may be too late for both of them. Their lives could end before the truth is ever exposed to the world. The truth that words can sometimes set on course a path of unforeseen destruction and torment. The truth that secrets never stay that way.
