Nach dem Studium der Mathematik und Industrietätigkeit 1983 Promotion auf dem Gebiet der Fabrikplanung. 1988 Habilitation. 1989 Hochschuldozent für Produktionsprozesssteuerung am Institut für Betriebsgestaltung, Universität Magdeburg. Seit 1994 Institutsleiter des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Fabrikbetrieb und -automatisierung (IFF) in Magdeburg und seit 2003 Universitätsprofessor auf dem Lehrstuhl Logistische Systeme an der Universität Magdeburg.
