Lewis Grassic Gibbon was the nome de plume of James Leslie Mitchell (1901-35). Born in Aberdeenshire, Mitchell served in the Royal Army Service Corps and RAF before beginning a full-time writing career. His works, particularly his trilogy A Scots Quair, garnered considerable critical attention before his premature death.
