Even before conception, the population of Potentia is meticulously genetically engineered, making disease and premature death barbaric memories of the past. This has allowed most of society to enter into a contrived utopia founded on the prioritization of certain traits...and disdain for anything different. Elliot has lived his whole life as an outcast struggling to fit in. He is an outlier-the Unplanned that should have never been born. With an older, Planned brother that excels even in a society filled with near-perfect citizens, he has survived living in the shadows of others' brilliance. When an infection destroys the very foundation of the specious society, Elliot is forced to come to terms with reality and decide what is more important: science or fate?
"What if?" It took two years for author Robin Berkstresser to pull that nagging question out of her brain and transform it into words on paper. The result was a three-part series called Specious that explores the provocative and divisive theory of genetic planning. Since then, Robin has continued to draw inspiration from her own life, twisting her experiences into stories that walk to the tune of Imagine Dragons and challenge the notion of a conventional society. Originally from Plano, Texas, Robin is a graduate of Kansas State University and currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma with her dog, Juno, and plenty of bottles of wine.
