Spilargis is a spider genus of the Salticidae family (jumping spiders). Its sole species, S. ignicolor, occurs in New Guinea. A subspecies, S. ignicolor bimaculata, is found on the Moluccas. The genus name is probably derived from the Ancient Greek roots spil- "spot" and arg- "shining". The species name is Latin for "the color of fire". bimaculata is Latin for "with two spots". The jumping spider family (Salticidae) contains more than 500 described genera and about 5,000 described species, making it the largest family of spiders with about 13% of all species.
