The Harlem Globetrotters have long been a staple of American basketball. However, their origins and their renaissance are largely unknown. They began not in Harlem, but Chicago's South Side as the brainchild of Abe Saperstein. The team sustained the early days of the NBA only to be overshadowed by it, yet ultimately reemerging as national and global stars.
Before Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Julius Erving, or Michael Jordan??before Magic Johnson and Showtime??the Harlem Globetrotters revolutionized basketball and spread the game around the world. In Spinning the Globe, author Ben Green tells the story of this extraordinary franchise and iconic American institution. We follow the Globetrotters' rise from backwoods obscurity during the harsh years of the Great Depression to become the best basketball team in the country and, by the early 1950s, the most popular sports franchise in the world. Green brings to life their struggles with racism and segregation, and their influence upon a nation's views about race and sport. We witness the Globetrotters' fall from grace to the brink of bankruptcy in the early 1990s, and their ultimate rebirth under Mannie Jackson today, as they once again amaze kids and families around the world. Now in paperback, this is the true and complete story of their amazing eighty years as a team, told with lyrical prose and masterful storytelling by Ben Green.
Autorenporträt
Ben Green is a Child Practitioner (BSc/ JNC), Family Support Worker, Fitness Professional, Well-being coach, the Founder of Activ8 Fitness Camp, National Diversity Award Winner 2017, European Diversity Award Shortlist Nominee 2017 and Author. Ben's journey began at the age of 16 volunteering at his local youth club In Rainham Essex, here is where he recognised his talents and spurred his passion in inspiring and supporting the younger generation. Ben has volunteered abroad in a variety of roles with International Organisations, that support and develop the younger generation. On returning to the UK at just 20, he then spent the next 5 years focusing on becoming an expert in his field, specialising in the personal and social development of children, especially in the areas of fitness, mental health and wellbeing. In April 2014, Ben founded Activ8 Fitness Camp, with the aim to support parents with children with challenging behaviours. Ben is passionate about encouraging children outdoors, here he hosts fitness classes for children, families and adults. Ben also delivers therapeutic well-being intervention in educational settings, working closely with a diverse group of children; which include nurseries, mainstream and special needs schools. The support does not stop there, Ben has a close relationship with parents and carers to ensure they are supported with any challenging behaviours at home, or specific matters they need guidance with. It is Ben's mission for him and his team to become role models across the nation. The health, fitness and wellbeing industries are full of public figures for adults to aspire, however very little for children, this overshadows the importance of putting the younger generations needs first. Ben and his team are determined to change this and put children's health, fitness and wellbeing on a bigger platform nationally.
