The median overall survival after the first episode of spontaneous ascites fluid infection in patients with viral cirrhosis is 12.6 months in our study in the absence of liver transplantation. Non-viral etiology has a poor prognosis compared to non-viral causes of cirrhosis with poorer survival and a higher frequency of complications. This could possibly be explained by the fact that patients with viral cirrhosis benefit from antiviral etiological treatment, whereas etiological treatment of other causes of cirrhosis is often contraindicated in advanced decompensated liver disease.
