Spring Lake, North Carolina, was incorporated on April 9, 1951, with an estimated population of 2,500; however, the area had been settled by the Scottish long before. Authors Howard B. Pate Jr. and Jami Sheppard have deep roots in the community. Mr. Pate, a World War II veteran, was named the town historian in 1994. He was postmaster for 31 years and served on the first Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce board of directors in 1962. Jami Sheppard, granddaughter of the town's first mayor, Grady Howard, followed in her grandfather's footsteps and became mayor pro tem in 2003.
