Located in the scenic heart of New Hampshire just south of the White Mountains and a few miles northwest of the much larger Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake has served as a quiet summertime destination for New Englanders for more than a century. Made popular as the filming location for the movie "On Golden Pond" in 1981, the lake was originally known by Native Americans as Keeseenunknipee, meaning "the goose lake in the highlands," and by the early 19th century was given another Abenaki name, "Asquam", meaning "water", which was later shortened to its present name, Squam. The Islands of Squam Lake captures the wonderful flora and fauna native throughout the islands...a testament to the natural serenity that can be found quietly paddling around its waters.
