The city has one of the most complete and systematic historical societies in the state. In 2014 the St. Marys & Benzinger Township Historical Society moved into a new building on Erie Avenue, guaranteeing its continued support and documentation of the city.

Dennis McGeehan is a retired college history professor who has worked at both Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh. He has also worked for many years as a freelance photographer travelling around the world numerous times. He has also worked as a photographer for the Philadelphia Foundation For Architecture. He is currently Director of the St. Marys Historical Society. He is the author of several books on St. Marys (PA) and Elk County (PA) history. He has worked in every state in the United States but particularly enjoys photographing the Pennsylvania Wilds region of North Central Pennsylvania.
