Located between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers, Stafford County was settled early in the 17th century and has retained its rural, agricultural traditions with small communities developing around ports, general stores, mills, and government centers. Since the 1970s, Stafford has undergone rapid growth as it develops into a bedroom community of Washington, D.C.
