Fast dissolving tablets are alternative to conventional dosage forms for patients like geriatrics, pediatrics, and bedridden patients, who experience difficulty in swallowing of conventional dosage. For administration of conventional dosage forms an 8-Oz glass of water is required, whereas when fast dissolving tablets placed on the tongue disintegrates rapidly and requires a little amount of water to facilitate swallowing. Fast dissolving tablets serve both the advantages of the conventional solid dosage forms and as well as liquid dosage forms. Fast dissolving tablets (FDT) will disintegrate rapidly in the mouth without the need for water. Fast dissolving tablets show significantly greater drug dissolution, absorption, the onset of clinical action, and drug bioavailability than conventional tablets. Formulation of fast dissolving tablets by direct compression technique includes the incorporation of superdisintegrants or highly water-soluble excipients into the formulation.Superdisintegrants play an important role in the formulation of fast dissolving tablets. Therefore, Starch glutamate a novel modified starch can be used as a superdisintegrant in FDTs.
