Autorenporträt
Eugene Manlove Rhodes, born on January 19, 1869, in Tecumseh, Nebraska, was a prominent author of Western fiction in the early 20th century. Much admired for his authentic portrayal of the American Southwest, Rhodes captured the spirit of the post-frontier era with vivid storytelling and genuine characterizations. He garnered a reputation as a 'cowboy chronicler,' often infusing personal experiences from his life into the landscapes and characters of his tales. His literary journey began after a series of odd jobs, which seeded his intimate knowledge of the land that would become the backdrop for his fiction. Rhodes's fascination with the West started with his move to New Mexico at the age of 17, where he worked as a cowboy and ranch manager. His best-known work, 'Stepsons of Light' (1921), showcases his skill in crafting narratives that are at once romantic, humorous, and filled with adventure, encapsulating the ethos of the Southwest frontier ethos. His prose, characterized by a blend of lyricism and straightforwardness, encapsulates the oral storytelling traditions of the West. The authenticity of his descriptions of the rough cowboy life earned him admiration among not only readers but his contemporaries as well. Although Rhodes passed away on June 27, 1934, in Pacific Grove, California, his contributions to Western literature have left an indelible mark, serving as a vivid reminder of the once untamed American frontier.
