Im Rahmen ihrer alljährlichen Arbeitskonferenz veranstalteten die Herausgeber und Mitarbeiter der Historisch-Kritischen Ausgabe der Werke und Briefe Adalbert Stifters ein Symposion, das vom 22. bis zum 25. Oktober 2003 in Linz-St. Magdalena stattfand und unter dem programmatischen Titel »Stifter und Stifterforschung im 21. Jahrhundert« stand. Als Beitrag zum Jubiläums-Jahr 2005, in dem sich Stifters Geburtstag zum 200. Male jährte, setzte es sich zum Ziel, unter den thematischen Schwerpunkten »Biographie - Wissenschaft - Poetik« die vielfältigen Forschungsergebnisse zumal der letzten Jahrzehnte zu sichten und zu werten, um daraus Ziele, Aufgaben und Perspektiven für die künftige Stifterforschung zu formulieren.
