NEAL ASCHERSON is a Scottish journalist and writer. His books include The Polish August, Black Sea, Games with Shadows, The Death of the Fronsac and Stone Voices. Over his career in journalism, he has written for the Scotsman, the Observer and the Independent on Sunday, and he is now a regular contributor to the London Review of Books.
