A storage ring is a type of circular particle accelerator in which a continuous or pulsed particle beam may be kept circulating for a long period of time, up to many hours. Storage of a particular particle depends upon the mass, energy and usually charge of the particle being stored. Most commonly, storage rings are to store electrons, positrons, or protons. The most common application of storage rings is to store electrons which then radiate synchrotron radiation. There are over 50 facilities based on electron storage rings in the world today, used for a variety of studies in chemistry and biology.
