The book 'Strategists and Strategy' was outcome from observations of functioning and conceptualisation of strategy at the level of junior and senior management, at unit and organisational level. What prompted the author in highlighting the issues as discussed in the book, were reluctance and the hesitancy of the management in strategising and the human aspects which has always played a very predominant part which is usually overlooked? The areas which make the strategy practical and successful are, strategists progressive thinking, deliberations in arriving at the deduction of options and courses of action, evaluation and relevance of the essential components of vision and strategy, the sensitivity factors in dealing and handling of resources, approach of positivity and optimism which always give impetus to the drive and determination, structured thinking and process evaluation to make the execution of strategy effective, meeting the challenges and lastly the strategist's attitude which derives involvement and commitment. Human participation in the strategy will always be an important factor, both in case of conceptualisation and execution of strategy. Strategist is not a standalone entity and he/she is not there just to visualise, to be a strategist the character and personality must encompasses certain facets and important ones are, competency and professionalism, defining the vision and to make it a reality, giving meaning to the mission, responsibility of strategising and being accountable, conscientiousness and ability to deliberate and evaluate, adapting with the environment, taking people along the defined path, planning the strategic operations and execution in meeting the objectives of the vision. The book covers the aspect of ground realities in strategising and way forward to strategic thinking. Brigadier Ashok Kumar Ganguly SM, VSM (Retd) was commissioned in Indian Army (Infantry) and retired after putting in 34 years of military service. He was commissioned in the Regiment of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and commanded an Infantry Battalion and a Brigade of Rashtriya Rifles in Counter Insurgency Sectors of Jammu & Kashmir. He has three decades of experience on command and staff appointments with varied exposure to military operations in North East India, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and High Altitude Sectors of Northern and Eastern Command of Indian Army. He is the recipient of Sena Medal (SM), Vishist Seva Medal (VSM) and Commendations for distinguished service in operations and staff duties. After retirement from Military Service in 2012, he joined the Indian Corporate Sector and has been part of the senior management group. Presently, he is in the power sector looking into the affairs of Corporate Support Services. He is Masters in Defence Studies from Madras University, Post Graduate of Defence Services Staff College, MBA and Masters Diploma in HR&IR. He is a prolific writer and has been contributing articles in various magazines; he has authored books on leadership personality development titled 'Leaders from the Barracks' published in 2016 and on military professionalism titled 'Generalship: All That Really Matters' published in 2018. The present book 'Kashmir: An Affair of Continued Existence' is his third publication.
