Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online.Fibers constitute a major component of the glass industry. The traditional fiberglass companies manufacture either reinforcement fibers or fibers for thermal and acoustic insulations. During the last three or four decades, a new glass fiber industry, namely the fiber optics industry, has seen explosive growth based on the use of silica glass fibers as optical waveguides. In particular, Dr. Robert D. Maurer has been recognized for his creative role in the development of fiber optics for telecommunications and guided lightwave technology for creating transparent materials with capabilities in the UV-Vis-IR portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. These applications require high tensile strengths over periods of time exceeding as much as 20 years. Consequently, there has arisen a great interest in quantifying the strength of glass and much has been documented and reviewed in the established literature.
