Josef Kohler (1849-1919) war ein vielseitiger und äußerst produktiver Rechtswissenschaftler - auf ihn gehen 2.500 juristische Schriften zurück. Seine Schwerpunkte lagen bei der vergleichenden Rechtswissenschaft, beim Urheberrecht und in späteren Jahren auch bei der Rechtsphilosophie. Der Begriff des Immaterialgüterrechts stammt von ihm. Nach Veröffentlichung des Buches 'Das deutsche Patentrecht' wurde Kohler 1888 Professor in Berlin. Er war zudem Mitbegründer der 'Zeitschrift für Vergleichende Rechtswissenschaft' und gab nach 1909 zusammen mit Ernst Rabel die 'Rheinische Zeitschrift für Zivil- und Prozessrecht' heraus.
