Increased use of nonlinear loads brought about many technical conveniences and economical profits, but on the other hand it has exerted a continual growing influence on the power system's operating conditions. Active power filter (APF) emerged as an effective solution to the power quality problems caused by nonlinear loads and unbalanced sources. Out of various hybrid Active power filter (APF) configurations, the series hybrid active power filter (SHAPF) has become more popular in recent time. The SHAPF is capable of compensating both voltage harmonics generating load and current harmonics generating load. This research work includes the study and experimental validation of SHAPF with a novel control algorithm, to compensate source current harmonics and source voltage unbalances simultaneously. Simulation and experimental investigations is presented for evaluating the performance of different control algorithms of SHAPF. In the experimental prototype the control circuit is developed using ARM Cortex-M4 STM32F407VGT6 microcontroller. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm and also validate the simulation results.
