Iron oxide nanoparticles are iron oxide particles with diameters between about 1 and 100 nanometers. The two main forms are magnetite (Fe3O4) and its oxidized form maghemite (Gamma-Fe2O3). They have attracted extensive interest due to their superparamagnetic properties and their potential applications in many fields. Among various chemical synthesis methods for metal oxides, sol-gel process offers several advantages over other methods, including good homogeneity, low cost, and high purity. In this thesis, pure magnetite nanoparticles are successfully synthesized via sol-gel method combined with annealing at the temperature range of 200-400 C using ferric nitrate and ethylene glycol as starting materials. The X-Ray Diffraction method (XRD), UV/VIS, TG/DTA, SEM and TEM characterization techniques, EDS, Particle size Analyzer (DLS)and VSM were used to obtain properties of nanoparticles. One of the applications of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is in water treatment. Congo Red is a benzidine-based anionic disazo dye. It is toxic to many organisms. It is used in different industries. Magnetite nanoparticles were employed for removal of CR and used as an effective adsorbent in the wastewater treatment.
