The recent studies have shown that worldwide there is an increasing trend of extreme precipitation events. A significant increasing trend is observed in the frequency and the magnitude of extreme rain events over Central India during the monsoon season, even though there is no evidence of significant trend in the mean annual rainfall. Even though major part of Gujarat state is under arid region, number of stations experience intense rainfall during south west monsoon. Intense rainfall of more than 20 cm per day is not uncommon over Gujarat region. In this paper, an attempt has been made to identify weather systems responsible for heavy and intense rainfall over Gujarat Region during the last decade.Synoptic systems responsible for heavy rainfall incidences such as monsoon depressions, tropical cyclones, offshore trough and MTC for the period 2000 to 2009 have been identified. Characteristics of system responsible such as spatial coverage, vertical extension, movement etc have been investigated using 3 hourly Brightness Temperature, OLR and Cloud Top Temperature from INSAT data.
