The study was carried out in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Department of Biochemistry, Pt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak. Lipid profile and apolipoproteins were analyzed in 50 normotensive pregnant (Group I) and 50 pregnant women with PIH (Group II) and in their cord blood respectively. In present study, significantly elevated lipid profile, apolipoprotein levels, atherogenic index in maternal and cord blood of PIH mothers were observed as compared to normotensive mothers. It can be concluded that in utero environment changes the structure, physiology and metabolism of fetus before birth and thereby determines the development of cardiovascular disease in later life. Data on lipoproteins, in maternal and cord blood can serve as a starting place for disease risk stratification and preventive interventions in the form of life style modification; since roots for adult heart disease began in utero and abnormal lipoprotein profile in childhood persists into adulthood.
