There is a great concern about the global increase in the prevalence of obesity especially in children and adolescents. As the problem appears to be increasing rapidly in children as well as in adults, the true health consequences may only become fully apparent in future. The major health consequences associated with overweight & obesity, namely NIDDM, CHD, HTN, gall bladder disease, psychological problems & certain types of cancer. The detection of obesity in children has sent alarm bells; hence recent studies have concentrated on this very vulnerable group. It is very essential that the data on prevalence of obesity in school children and the factors responsible for the obesity should be available to suggest interventional measures. This study is a step in this direction.
