Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss especially among older adults. The periodontal diseases are highly widespread and can affect up to 90% of the worldwide population. The non surgical methods are treatment through systemic and local administration, targeted delivery of antibiotics. These methods are less effective as they are easily washed away along with food, water or saliva. This book thus provides a novel concept of mucoadhesive submicron emulsion which is formulated for local drug delivery of antimicrobial by mucoadhesive and sustained action that can be used to treat periodontal disease. It provides a detailed data of preparation and characterization of mucoadhesive submicron emulsion. The powerful permeation enhancing ability with a suitable mucoadhesiveness and viscosity makes it promising alternative carrier for administration of drug molecule to periodontal pocket at low concentration. These systems are beneficial by maintaining optimum levels of antibiotic in the periodontal pocket for a sustained period of time, avoiding systemic side effects associated with high oral doses and ease of use with high patient acceptance.
