The universal prevalence of dental caries has always been viewed as a public health issue. The difficulty in excluding sugar from the diet in total makes it even more difficult to reduce the cariogenic effect of sugars in the diet. With the shift in focus towards emerging preventive dentistry, sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners can be viewed as a viable alternative to combat the cariogenic effect of sugars to a large extent. This review presents an extensive, concise information on role of sugar substitutes in their influence in oral health.
