...Wassaja Yazzi (Wind Doctor), medicine man over all Diné Bikéyah, grew to maturity in a harsh land of earth, air, fire, and water-keeper of "Sun God's Treasure." In the time before the land, he was assigned to lead his people during one of the darkest periods in history. The previous four worlds of the Navajo had been destroyed because of the people's failure to keep the promise of Sun God. The same peril loomed again, perhaps for the last time... A mediator was chosen to deliver messages from Sun God and Changing Woman to earth's plane of existence; one who would voluntarily forfeit life to initiate an ancient legend. Yazzi's son Totsoni, killed in World War II, had married Yoko, a Japanese, and left behind twin sons - Tsosie and Mushashi. To avoid persecution due to his American heritage and appearance, Tsosie was sent to live with his Navajo grandfather Wassaja (wise and compassionate). Mushashi was raised by his Japanese grandfather Yoshio Miyamoto (cold and ruthless) who blamed Navajo code breakers for the death of his own son during the war - he swore eternal revenge - to unearth the legend and the treasure, to destroy the Navajo people. When, in a stroke of luck the twins become college roommates, Yoko could wait no more. Together with Wassaja, the secret was unveiled to the twins - the purpose that was theirs alone in this life - foreordained before the world was.As Yoshio gets ever closer to the treasure and all seems lost, Changing Woman delivers her prized twin daughters to encourage the twins to fulfill the promise to the mediator and to Sun God. Love blossoms as they struggle in a mighty test of faith, will, perseverance, strength, and honor to keep the treasure and the fifth world intact, fearing the great wrath of Monster Slayer as they toil, they race against time and world destruction as attempts to reason with Yoshio fail. Since the beginning, when Tsosie learned to shoot arrows through a rolling hoop from horseback and Mushashi became a master in Samurai swordsmanship, the two were prepared as they join forces with Navajo spirit warriors of the past to preserve the treasure and the lives of all in this world. The spirit warriors teach the twins as they stand in midair, above the fire in the Hogan. Tsosie's eyes glow green with knowledge - are they the legend? ...Yoshio discovers an intact sand painting, an evil omen, unearthed at a dig site. Instructed to stay away, late at night his men photograph the painting...cameras flashing, the painting changes colors. Suddenly, four spirit warriors appear from the depths of the earth through the painting. Grabbing three men, they suck them down through the barriers of the previous four worlds... Through the intercession of spirit warriors and the appearance of mighty Monster Slayer and Sun God; it is not until the spine tingling conclusion, after numerous warnings, deaths, and booby traps that Yoshio Miyamoto learns the true price of hatred!
