The principal character is a hydrogeologist who leads the investigation of this environmental crime scene. He suffers partial memory loss resulting from a tragic accident that occurs during the early stages of the investigation. Subsequent to his physical recovery and return to the site of the accident, he is tormented by a slow recall of his memory while continuing to direct the investigation. He shares his personal feelings with others and they with him. Over the course of the investigation, strong friendships develop between him and other members of his staff and local residents. The adventure concludes with the start of ground-water remediation program and the return of the principal character to his home office.
