Our present understanding of Nature at its most elementary level is contained in the standard model (SM) of particle physics. In spite of being confirmed emphatically in a multitude of experiments, it is believed by many that a grander structure is required at much higher energies in order to overcome some of the short-comings of the SM. These motivations are explained. Some aspects and experimental probes of two of the most promising of these theoretical proposals - supersymmetry and extra (space) dimensions - are considered in detail.
