Preparation for a medical career requires the knowledge of many facts, understanding of these facts, and the application of these facts to patient care. Simply remembering is not enough. This book aims to anchor knowledge and understanding of the care of the surgical patient by placing the contents with in the frame work of typical clinical cases.

This book covers general and vascular surgery. Originally a surgeon was not medically qualified, often a barber (hence calling surgeons Mr., and the first colleges being 'Barber Surgeons'), cutting hair one day, taking teeth out the next and amputating legs the third. The physician would tell the barber what to do, to whom and when. Gradually medically qualified doctors took up the scalpel themselves.

The subject of surgery covers all aspects of the care of patients with surgical conditions. Surgery is not simply the performance of an operation, but involves managing conditions when there is potentially an operation that may play a role in patient care. The pairing of general surgery with vascular surgery is a pragmatic approach to the realities of clinical practice. Although in an increasing number of places vascular surgery is becoming separated from general surgery, in many more surgeons may cover both areas, particularly as emergencies. On a 'surgical' ward a mixture of conditions may be present.

The aim of this book is to concentrate on the most common or serious conditions. The content is therefore less all encompassing than some undergraduate surgical texts. One day surgical knowledge is required to pass an examination and the next it is required to potentially save a life. This book hopes to cover both of these requirements of surgical knowledge.
The book is divided into two parts; clinical conditions and hospital care. The first part deals with the clinical conditions that a general and vascular surgeon would expect within their practice. The chapters cover groupings of conditions that are held together by sub-speciality interest, and in some instances sub-divided into anatomically based groupings.

The second part deals with the hospital care of surgical patients. A newly qualified doctor is required to understand the clinical importance of the conditions and problems that they will face immediately on taking up their first post. The care of the surgical patient will involve understanding pre-operative preparation, anaesthesia, and routine post-operative care. As operations are associated with post-operative complications these are also addressed. Each section begins with clinical scenarios in which a 'typical' case is presented. Along with the clinical scenario an explanation of the mechanism behind the findings is set out. The differences expected between the key differential diagnoses are also covered, as are the definitive/ diagnostic investigations. At the end of the scenario the clinical key-points for the condition under discussion is summarised.
Next, the background to the condition is laid out. This includes the standard information related to a clinical condition i.e. aetiology, pathology, clinical findings, investigation, management, and prognosis. At the end of the background section there is a fast facts summary that contains the key elements to remember. This is also intended as a quick revision of the condition. It is easy to pick out whilst flicking through the pages as it has a distinctive colour scheme.

Reviews
- 'Throughout the book, the readability is excellent. I do not habitually read textbooks for enjoyment, more as a point of reference, but when going through this text, I found it very easy to handle. It was informative whilst remaining at a level I understood, and without being scientific to the point of unintelligibility' -Richard Hutchinson, Imperial College School of Medicine.
- 'In general I think the material is very good. The patient based approach to each section is very readable and presents core information that I think will be very useful both as a PRHO and to get me through my exams.' -Tom Button, Medical Student, Selywn College, Cambridge.
