The aim is to analyze the status of Sustainable Human Development (SHD) in Majhgaon beel area which is one of the major constitute beels of the great Chalan beel. The impact of the beel on the livelihood system of the local community has been explored. To compare the level of SHD, two buffer zones of 500 meter each around the beel were drawn and the measured values of SHD between these three zones were compared. The research explores the critical role of population composition, structure and distribution in SHD in the study area. Poor level of human development in the beel area is due to the factors of poverty and inequality. The research has revealed that decrease in fisheries resources in the beel is the most important cause for low income of the study area people. However, sand carpeting, again, doesn t allow the local people to cultivate during the dry periods when there is no water in the beel.
