Saturday night: Andrew Bolkov, a social worker in Milford, is called in to convince an old Italian man, Guerrino Alinari, to leave the house from which he's been evicted. For an entire week, the two men will spend time together, and Andrew will be drawn ever deeper into Guerrino's story, a story rich with emotions and successes, as captivating as it is cruel and dangerous. He will witness a dream turned nightmare, perhaps because dreams should never come true, perhaps because "dreams should stay tucked away, breathing life into the imagination." In light of this relationship, of this story, Andrew will have the chance to reframe his own life, his bond with Mary (his wife), and with Luca, that uniquely gifted son life has given him. All week long, Andrew will be haunted by an obsessive thought, an insistent, almost morbid question: Who is Guerrino Alinari? Is he the victim he portrays in his stories, caught between talent and suffering, or is he the monster who once shocked the entire world with unimaginable brutality?
