Autorenporträt
Dr. Dan M. Frangopol is the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture at Lehigh University. Before joining Lehigh University in 2006, he was Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he is now Professor Emeritus. From 1979 to 1983, he held the position of Project Structural Engineer with A. Lipski Consulting Engineers in Brussels, Belgium. He received his doctorate in Applied Sciences with the highest distinction (summa cum laude) from the University of Liège, Belgium in 1976, and his diploma in civil engineering from the Institute of Civil Engineering of Bucharest, Romania in 1969. Dr. Frangopol's main research interests are in the development and application of probabilistic and optimization concepts and methods to civil and marine engineering, including: structural reliability and probabilistic mechanics; life-cycle cost analysis; probability-based assessment, design, and multi-criteria life-cycle optimization of structures and infrastructure systems; structural health monitoring; life-cycle performance maintenance and management of structures and distributed infrastructure under extreme events (earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods); risk-based assessment and decision-making; multi-hazard risk mitigation; infrastructure sustainability and resilience to disasters; and climate change adaptation. He is widely recognized as a leading educator and pioneer in the field of life-cycle civil engineering. According to ASCE (2012) "Dan M. Frangopol is a preeminent authority in bridge safety and maintenance management, structural system reliability, and life-cycle civil engineering. His contributions have defined much of the practice around design specifications, management methods, and optimization approaches. From the maintenance of deteriorated structures and the development of system redundancy factors to assessing the performance of long-span structures, Dr. Frangopol's research has not only saved time and money, but very likely also saved lives... Dr. Frangopol is a renowned teacher and mentor to future engineers." He is also "widely recognized as a leading educator and creator in the field of life-cycle civil engineering. " (ASCE 2015). "Frangopol's groundbreaking research into infrastructure from a holistic perspective has earned him a reputation in the civil engineering community" as the "Father of Life-Cycle Analysis" (ASCE 2020). He is an experienced researcher and technical consultant to companies, organizations and government agencies, both nationally and abroad. Dr. Frangopol is the Founding President of both the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE), and the Founding Vice-President of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII). He is also the Founding Editor of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, an international peer-reviewed journal launched in 2005. His research and professional service have garnered numerous honors and awards from ASCE, IABMAS, IABSE, IALCCE, IASSAR, ISHMII and other professional organizations. In 2023, ASCE established the Dan M. Frangopol Medal for Life-Cycle Engineering of Civil Structures. Dr. Frangopol was inducted into the National Academy of Construction of the United States, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Academia Europaea (London), the Engineering Academy of Japan, the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, the Romanian Academy and Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania. He is a Distinguished Member of ASCE, an Inaugural Fellow of both SEI and EMI, and a Fellow of ACI, IABSE, and ISHMII. Dr. Frangopol holds five honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships at universities in Asia, Australia, and Europe. He has authored/co-authored four books, 70 book chapters, and over 490 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 15 award-winning papers. Dr. Sunyong Kim is a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wonkwang University in South Korea. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yonsei University, South Korea in 1999, and earned his Master of Science degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2004. He started his doctoral studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2005, and under the supervision of Professor Dan M. Frangopol he earned a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering in 2011 from Lehigh University. Before coming to Wonkwang University, he worked as a senior researcher in the Central Research Institute of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd from 2012 to 2015. Dr. Kim's research interests include life-cycle performance and service life management of civil and marine structures based on reliability and optimization, structural health monitoring and damage detection, and safety and risk assessment of structures under natural hazards and climate change. Dr. Kim has served as an editorial board member of three international peer-reviewed journals (Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, International Journal of Steel Structures) and three Korean peer-reviewed journals (Journal of Korean Society of Steel Construction, KSCE Journal of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Research, Journal of the Korea Concrete Institute). Dr. Kim is the recipient of the 2014 ASCE J. James R. Croes Medal, the 2014 IABMAS Junior Prize, the 2018 IALCCE Junior Award, and the 2022 ASCE Arthur M. Wellington Prize. He has authored/co-authored two books, seven book chapters, and several peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. Dr. Kim is a member of ASCE and member of both the Executive Board of the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE) and the Executive Committee of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS).
