School reform is at the forefront of the national
conversation on education; however, implementation of
such efforts proves to be challenging due to the
complexity of change itself. Teaching school
practitioners about reform and its accompanying
change process is crucial to successful change
efforts. It is also important to focus on knowing how
teachers and administrators experience change since
personal interpretations of change affect reform
outcomes. Unfortunately, advocates, policy makers,
and politicians often do not focus on the
significance of these areas. Thus it was the intent
of this book to do just that. Follow along as two
literacy reform efforts, one a national reform effort
and the second, a locally generated reform effort,
cross paths in a poor, rural Pennsylvania school
district. Read a clear and focused account of the
experiences of district personnel, as seen through
their eyes, as well as the steps that were followed
to support implementation. Read the ten "Lessons
Learned" that were based on the findings of the
account and see how they provide an invaluable guide
for policy makers, administrators, and consultants
working in school reform.
