Taiwan s complex informal diplomatic practices and
the forces behind them have brought both successes
and failures in Taiwan s relations with former
Yugoslavia and its successor states. Despite its
short triumph with Macedonia, Taiwanese diplomacy did
not succeed in accomplishing its objectives in
post-Yugoslav states. The study has attempted to
scrutinize the major reasons behind the setbacks and
opportunities. It provides a systematic analysis of
major external and internal influences that have
shaped Taipei s diplomatic endeavors in the
post-Yugoslav region by employing four basic levels
of analysis the system, the state, the societal and
the individual level. This book represents one of the
first endeavors at conducting a detailed study of
Taiwan s relations with the former Yugoslav
republics. Accordingly, it will greatly contribute to
scholarship and practice in Taiwan and China studies,
diplomacy and international relations.
