Maybe we love the fact that the hero has had to overcome adversity through hard work and determination. Maybe it's the action-packed pace of the story, with wizardry special effects bringing fantasy to life. Maybe it's something to do with the superhero's secret identity; think Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent and Peter Parker - people who carry on with their "normal" lives until they're called to action and transform into their superhero alter ego. Whatever the reason, we idealise these superheroes and see them as unique, talented individuals who save the day. The superhero is often an outcast who has acquired unique powers at birth or through some accident or gift. They're revered and adored for their heroism. But what happens when you try to become the superhero of your team? When you put on your cape and fly through the office doors to save the day and rescue your people? Unfortunately, you may not experience the happy ending of the Hollywood blockbusters we love to watch. As a leader, I've tried to be the superhero and wore my cape proudly. I've tried my best to protect my team and rescue them from imminent danger: unrealistic deadlines, client complaints, and demanding executives. But for me, it was exhausting and unsustainable. Now, I hear the same story from my clients - clients who are trying to navigate their role as leaders, juggling competing interests. Sound familiar? Maybe you, too, are a leader who is trying to do the right thing for yourself, your people, your clients and your organisation. You're attempting to be everything to everyone and trying to save the day, every day. It's busy, and you're pulled in so many different directions. You're smart, great at what you do, and you care about your team. You want to achieve great things and be a leader people want to follow. Yet, perhaps you're missing something. Maybe you need a different perspective, a deeper level of self-awareness, a mindset shift or some practical strategies to step up and lead your team with confidence and courage. This book is for you. It's a book for anyone who wants to take off the cape, hang up the mask, and put down their weapon. It's for leaders who want to empower their people and see them succeed; leaders who, instead of playing the superhero, want to be the super coach. Happy reading. Midja x
