Tamara Madden was a Jamaican-born, American-raised, mixed-media artist and professor of art and visual culture at Spelman College in Atlanta. Taking inspiration from her homeland, Gustav Klimt, and Milwaukee artist Ras 'Ammar Nsoroma-among others-Madden often depicted powerful Black women of the African diaspora, royal and draped in elaborate headdresses and lavish ensembles. Madden struggled most of her adult life with chronic health issues, and turned to art for a semblance of normalcy and relief. She tragically died in 2017 at the age of 42, but her work lives on to represent her strength and unique point of view. The 12 images in this calendar offer a window into her inspiring life and legacy.
