Cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (I/R) is the second leading cause of death worldwide. The pathological mechanism of cerebral I/R is complex and multifactorial which includes ATP depletion, disruption of ionic homeostasis, excitotoxicity, oxidative damage, inflammation and apoptosis. Search for agents targeting these multipathological consequences is a challenge to researchers worldwide. Extensive research has been focused on the search of phytochemicals from traditional medicinal plants for stroke therapy. This review provides the summary of some important phytochemicals as neuroprotectants targeting cerebral I/R consequences in a concised manner and outlines the update. A systematic review of literature was collected using scientific databases such as Science Direct, Springer, Pub Med, Google Scholar with the use of keywords as Cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury, phytochemicals, stroke. Research targeting cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury especially focused on traditional medicinal plants and their phytochemicals by researchers all over around the world.
