The work presented here is the result of bibliographical research, motivated by many questions about traditional grammar, its history over the twenty-three centuries of its existence, as well as its applicability in schools, and especially with regard to Portuguese language teaching. The aim of this research is not to delve into the history of traditional grammar, but simply to recount some important moments in its history and its use today. Over the twenty-three centuries, traditional grammar has often taken on a philosophical and normative character. Nor is it the aim of this work to explore the study of the normative grammar used in our schools. It will only present ideas about its use, which is intended to stimulate reflection on the teaching of language in schools, providing a possible strategy to make teaching more meaningful for students.
