This book provides an up-to-date overview of the clinical applications, methods, and technologies of teleophthalmology within the field of preventive medicine. The ability of novel methods to detect the initial signs of neurodegenerative diseases on the basis of alterations in the retina is reviewed, and detailed attention is paid to the role of teleophthalmology in screening for vision-threatening diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. A major part of the book is devoted to novel imaging methods and the latest information technologies, including advanced mobile communication and Web 2.0 applications in teleophthalmology. In addition, the initial projects of an interdisciplinary cooperation in preventive medicine are described. Autorenporträt
Georg Michelson gained his MD from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1982 and subsequently served his residency and fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology at the university, gaining his Habilitation in 1992. He is currently Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the department and is the Founder and Director of the Interdisciplinary Center of Ophthalmic Preventive Medicine and Imaging at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Dr. Michelson is a member of the Program Committee of the German Ophthalmology Society (DOG). He received in 1999 the Prize ¿Klinische Monatsblätter für Augenheilkunde¿, in 2006 the ¿Medicine-Technique-Health¿- Prize of Erlangen, in 2007 the Innovation-Prize of Stiftung Familie Klee, in 2008 the eHealth-Prize of the University Bayreuth, in 2012 the Karl-Storz Telemedicine-Prize, and in 2012 the DOG Glaucoma Prize. He is a founder and member of the International Society of Ocular Circulation and Oximetry (ISOCO) and served as President of the society from 2006 to 2009. He is currently Vice-President of the Association of Ocular Circulation (AOC). Dr. Michelson is publisher and editor of the Atlas of Ophthalmology (online multimedia database). He is the author of 129 peer-reviewed publications.
