TMJ forms an integral part of stomatognathic system. In the course of the past few decades the subject of TMJ disorders has gained increasing attention among dentists. Temporomandibular disorders is a collective term embracing number of clinical problems that involve the masticatory musculature, the TMJ or both & associated structures. Decision making in prosthetic dentistry & in the management of patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders is strongly influenced by the clinical & educational background of the dentist. The complex anatomy of the region compounded with the variability of symptoms involved, presents a challenging situation during management of temporomandibular disorders. The multi-factorial origin of TMJ dysfunctions has led to confusion about etiology & treatment. Diagnosis of Temporomandibular disorders have to be established from comprehensive evaluation of the patient. A clinical examination should not rely on one view of the patient. A practitioner should have a good concept of patient's condition from the medical & dental history & should use whatever diagnostic modalities available like radiographs computed tomography, MRI to verify.
